Jane has a great pair of mitts knitted by her BFF’s mother that she wished could be a bit cozier. Oh, and also covered with dozens of love hearts. Afterthought thrums seemed to be the perfect solution. Thrumming would typically be done as you knit, with each thrum knitted in with a stitch. It’s a technique attributed to the folks in Newfoundland and Labrador, who I suspect would know a thing or two about keeping their hands warm.
To afterthought thrum, I embroidered the mitts with merino fleece using the duplicate stitch technique (video tutorial below). The result is very similar to conventional thrumming – with the added advantage of my hands felting the roving nicely as I embroidered… Try it out and give your mitts a cozy makeover!
Materials
one pair of knitted mittens
one ounce (28 grams) of fleece (I used white merino top)
Another sweet, seamless pattern by Tora Frøseth! My first Tora knit was the Magda Tunic and I fell in love with the top-down construction. I used the same yarn in this Sweetheart Dress for Anaya – Cadenza by Estelle. Merino and tussah silk! Not too warm for an L.A. baby I hope.
The heart detail around the yoke is too cute. The body of the dress is worked in stockinette stitch, with rows of garter stitch at the bottom to stop it from curling. This project had me thinking about a me-sized knit dress, and then I remembered this lace dress from Védis Jónsdottir’s book Einband. Hmmm.
You can just make out this handsome Pottageville horse in the background of the top photo. As you can see, we were more interested in him than he was in us!
I broke three – count them, three – birch knitting needles making this little heart. Oh, the perils of knitting on size 0 double-pointed needles. This was a very satisfying project nonetheless – designed by Kristin Ledgett of The Knit Cafe. The pattern is available for free on Knitty. I made this one with Smooshy sock yarn from Dream in Color.
Doesn’t it fill you with love just looking at it!?
My little sister came to visit for Thanksgiving. Yay! In honour of her visit I knit her up the La-La-Love-You Cowl by Sandra Park. We picked up a skein of Manos del Uruguay in Stellar (110) at The Knit Cafe. It took a little less than a skein to make the cowl. It’s hard to tell from this picture, but it’s a pretty heart lace pattern.
I bought the lion brooch awhile ago from HeliS’s Etsy shop. Very cute and even cuter with this cowl!
