Pattern: Hemp Washcloth

Hemp is the perfect material for making washcloths. It’s naturally antibacterial and mould resistant, and the finished product can be safely machine washed and dried. I ordered some allhemp6 from Lanaknits Designs recently (intended for this great market bag), and they were nice enough to throw in some sample yarn as well. As it turns out, the perfect amount for a hemp washcloth. If you have a full skein to work with, you should have enough yarn to make three or four washcloths.

Finished Measurements

20 cm square

One skein of dk weight hemp yarn (I used hempforknitting hempton in sage)

3.50 mm crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Approximately 15 sts over 10 cm

1. Chain 30

2. Insert the hook through the second chain from the hook and work a single crochet in each of the foundation chain stitches to complete the first row

3. To start the second row of single crochet, turn the work and chain one. Inserting the hook under both loops at the top of the stitch, work a single crochet in each single crochet of the previous row

4. Work following rows in the same way as the second row until the cloth measures 20 cm square

5. Work a border around the cloth by single crocheting in each stitch.  Place three stitches in each corner stitch

6. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm tail. Pull the tail through the last stitch to tie it off and weave in all ends with the tapestry needle

7. Get washing
